Celebrating Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week & National Environmental Education Week

Last week, PCG Education celebrated National AfterSchool Association (NAA)'s Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week. It was a busy week as we had the pleasure of also celebrating the National Environmental Education Foundation's (NEEF) National Environmental Education Week (EEWeek). As we posted endless amounts of information on social media and sent out many messages thanking our afterschool professionals, some information might have been missed. In this article, we will do a recap of what we shared on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.

Monday:

On Monday, we discussed the importance of EE Week. NEEF's 13th annual EE Week celebrates instructors who are helping the present and future in the world of environmental education and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) by educating the next generation of K-12 environmental learners. Environmental learning activities took place across the country in classrooms and afterschool programs. PCG Education provides academic and enrichment activities that are designed to help students gain an appreciation for team-based learning and improve character/social development, while building their 21st Century Skills. EE Week and the NEEF supports PCG Education's goals. 


We also discussed the importance of Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week. The week is marked by celebrations encouraging people to thank the afterschool professionals who make a difference in the lives of youth, so we thanked all of our afterschool instructors! According to NAA, "There's an estimated 850,000 afterschool professionals in the United States and an estimated 10.2 million children participate in afterschool programs each year. They are widely credited as the way to provide enhanced education in STEM, Literacy, The Arts, Social Emotional Learning, Health & Wellness, and more." We couldn't thank our afterschool instructors enough for making a difference in the lives of students! The conversation grew throughout the week with #heartofafterschool. We also shared a video created by NAA to describe to everyone what Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week details.


Tuesday:

We celebrated EE Week by discussing one of our many hands-on, collaborative that are specifically designed for students and are environmentally education. The activity is titled "Cleaning Water," that entails students having the problem: What can I do to make clean water?

Students:  -design and build their own water filtering system.  -collect data to compare water before and after filtering.  -develop a conclusion based upon the results of this experiment.  -compare individual results to class results to look for patterns.


Day two of Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week continued by discussing why afterschool professionals do what they do! We wrote a blog post about an article from NAA that can be found here. Here's an excerpt:

"A study of the U.S. Department of Education's 21st Century Community Learning Centers program showed that participating students had fewer absences and less tardiness, higher grades, higher rates of homework completion and increased rates of parental involvement in school."





Wednesday:

We shared an awesome STEM & Our Planet infographic to spread awareness about EE Week!




To help spread awareness for about Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week, we shared some alarming statistics from Afterschool Alliance.


-The parents of 19.4 million children say their children would participate in afterschool if a program were available.

-A report on 21st Century Community Learning Centers (afterschool programs receiving federal funds) showed that 45 percent of all participants improved their reading grades and 41 percent improved their math grades.

-Teens who do not participate in afterschool programs are nearly three times more likely to skip classes than teens who do participate.

-Parents with children in afterschool programs are less stressed, have fewer unscheduled absences, and are more productive at work.

-On school days, the hours between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. are the peak hours for juvenile crime.




Thursday:

We shared one more environmentally educational activity titled, "Oil Spill Cleanup," for EE Week.


Students:

-identify some causes and effects of oil spills on a water source and the organisms that use that water
  -describe the different methods that environmental engineers use to clean up water pollution. 
-use volume to describe the amount of oil and water removed during the model clean up. 
-organize their oil removal data and analyze using a bar graph.

Lastly, for day four of Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week, we gave statistics displaying how dedicated afterschool professionals to the field. Did you know...

-55% have 6+ years of experience
-66% have a bachelor’s degree or higher
-78% are employed full-time
