Denise Callaway, a PCG Education instructor, teaches middle and high school at Atlanta Public Schools (APS) in Atlanta, Georgia. Denise has been with PCG Education for a year as an instructor and partakes in afterschool, summer camp, and daytime tutoring. She is solution oriented, finds various ways to accomplish tasks, teaches her students how to deal with outside forces, has various goals for her students, and finds numerous ways to teach them. She enjoys interfacing with students and teachers in the APS school system. She also helps other instructors by answering their questions, participating in training, and finding ways to motivate them.
Denise says her favorite story as a PCG Education instructor involves one of her 10th grade students. “He made good grades and had a college reach out to him for a summer school program. If he went to this program, his college tuition would be completely paid for. I asked probing questions because he said he wasn’t going to go, so I, of course, asked him why. He briefly described family issues, needing to keep his summer job to pay for household items. He was afraid he would lose the job next summer. I, inevitably, had a heart-to-heart with him. We researched the school to see the tuition cost, which was over 100k. I showed him what a 100K loan would look like with interest and discussed how long it would take him to pay off this loan. We looked at the big picture and his future. He realized he shouldn’t sacrifice now for something way better later. Then we discussed the next steps - submitting the application, writing an essay, and the deadline. He only had 2 weeks to get it in and I followed up with him every day, making sure he sent everything in, until summer vacation. I saw him the following school year and asked if he went. He said he went, will receive the full scholarship, and that all was okay with his family. We both laughed, giggled, and I gave him the biggest hug. I told him how proud I was of him. This is just one of the stories I have with these children. I love them very much!!!"
Denise enjoys teaching children and has fun showing it. She visually showcases that she is there for them and gives her students hi-fives, looks them in their eyes, interacts with them, encourages them, and visually showcases that she is there for them. She loves getting to know her students and does not focus one-hundred percent on school work. She makes sure to ask probing questions to see where they are trying to go in life, and then helps them see how school will help them get there. Denise truly represents PCG Education’s goal by not only encouraging students’ successes in school but also in life. PCG Education is happy to have Denise Callaway as an instructor and is proud of her successes with students.
