August Instructor Spotlight

In 2015, PCG Education-UI was proud to partner with Baptist Hill Middle School, part of Charleston County School District.  We provided daytime science tutoring to students in grades 6-8.  Along with management of the program and aligned science curriculum, PCG Education-UI delivered two tutors.

Mr. Pope, a former science teacher, went over in depth topics that were currently being covered in class.  Many students were displaying a mastery of learning in the topics, so he began to touch on high school biology material.  On several occasions, students would reteach lessons to the rest of the class on topics that the class hadn't quite mastered.

Ms. Throckmorton, or Ms. T as the kids called her, is a former food scientist.  She worked primarily with the students that had not quite mastered the material, but never gave up on these students.  Several students had 30 points of growth from one week to the next.  Also, their confidence in the material greatly excelled.  Students that typically never answered in class were beginning to contribute.  At voluntary Saturday tutoring sessions, Ms. T's students would arrive, wanting to learn more and more.  One student, who was on a third grade reading level, was very frustrated because he never could "get it."  After several weeks of working with Ms. T,  the student had an abundance of daily questions about the topic and became exponentially more interested in science.  After retaking his exam, he went from a 55 to a 72.  Overall, the students' science scores increased 15 percentage points from the previous year's science scores.  In addition to that, the scores were within 1 point of the district average.

We would like to thank Mr. Pope and Ms. T for their hard work with the students of Baptist Hill Middle School.  Their teamwork helped students excel in the classroom and helped increase engagement.
